Technical Issues / Not sure if bug or how things work here

Hi all! 
I'm a new player here and I just want to tell you that i'm mesmerized by how similar this server is to the classic game that I remember.
However, I have a slight problem. Since I started playing I didn't get any kind of gear nor weapon from quests. The only gear available is Future Heroes gear. I got basic bow (which was already in my inventory), basic helmet and boots from treasure chest. I'm wondering, if there is any way to get low level gear (1-45), other than simply buying it from merchants? Is it a bug that I didn't get anything or is this how server works?
